Ear wax, also called cerumen, is a waxy substance that builds up in the ear canals of humans and other mammals. It can be grey, orange, red, or yellow. Earwax is made up of dead skin cells, hair, and cerumen that comes from the ceruminous and sebaceous glands in the outer ear canal.
Yes, earwax can make it hard to hear. But it doesn't happen as often as you might expect. In fact, hearing care professionals see very few people whose hearing loss is directly caused by too much ear wax (cerumen impaction).
Wax in the ear can look anywhere from light yellow to dark brown. There isn't always a blockage when the colours are darker.
Signs of earwax buildup include sudden or partial loss of hearing, tinnitus, a full feeling in the ear, and maybe even an earache.
If earwax doesn't get cleaned out, it can cause an infection. Contact a specialist if you have severe pain in your ear or pain that doesn't go away, drainage from your ear, fever, coughing, hearing loss that doesn't go away, an odour coming from your ear, or feeling dizzy.
